Day 120

Day 120: April 30th

Odin

Another minimate from the Thor movie line, Odin the all father as played by Sir Anthony Hopkins. I love the detail and over all look of this minimate. The helmet is an amazing piece of toy sculpting and the spear looks pretty accurate! One wish would have been for a hairpiece for when the helmet is off.

Day 119

Day 119: April 29th

Big Time Spider Man

Now I can fully admit that I have absolutely no idea what this suit is all about but I do find it to be a pretty neat look. I can’t say it really grabs a spot in my top Spidey costumes but I don’t hate it either. Best of all is the fact that it translates very well in minimate form so that’s a huge plus. The nifty web line helps too!

Day 118

Day 118: April 28th

Shadowland Iron Fist

There have been many people that have been waiting for a modern looking Iron Fist minimate and now we have it. It took me a little getting used to the over sized hands they used to show the wraps on his hands but I am getting more accustomed to them and not really minding them much. I do enjoy how DST included the extra hands and a hairpiece for an unmasked look too.

Day 117

Day 117: April 27th

Age of Apocalypse Magneto

After his friend Charles Xavier dies in his arms, the life of Magneto changes drastically and instead of becoming a villain he instead takes up Xaviers crusade and forms the X-Men. As I mentioned before, I really loved the designs in the AoA story and love how well they have been translated into minimate form. The various hair pieces used to show his longer hair both with and without his helmet are a nice touch and the black face makes for some great visuals! When these 2 box sets were announced I was overjoyed and the fact that they have added more AoA character releases to help fill out the characters from the story is awesome!

Day 116

Day 116: April 26th

Age of Apocalypse Rogue

Wife of Magneto, mother of Charles and co-leader of the X-Men this version of Rogue is defiantly a strong force in the Age of Apocalypse. While the minimate looks great and has captured the look perfectly I am still, after all these years, not 100% sold on this look. The up side is that the more I work with the minimate the more accepting of the look I am.

Day 115

Day 115: April 25th

Age of Apocalypse Cyclops

The AoA version of Cyclops is on the wrong side of the fight, being one of Apocalypses prelates and one of the group in charge of the vile Pens facility. He has a much more rough look with his scruffy face and the long hair which covers the missing eye, lost in battle, making him live up to his name! I really enjoy the new look for this character and equally enjoy how they translated it in the minimate version.

Day 114

Day 114: April 24th

Sundays with my Son

My dad said that this is an awesome set up. I picked this set up because I like Captain America and the red skull. They came together in a box set in wave 25. Red skull came with two jackets and a silver gun. Captain America comes with his shield a pocket knife and a gun.

Day 113

Day 113: April 23rd

Age of Apocalypse Sunfire

I absolutely loved the Age of Apocalypse storyline when it first came out and I still do. The re-imagining of the entire Marvel universe was such a great idea and the overall story was amazing! There were a lot of great character redesigns and Sunfire was a huge hit, so much so that Marvel eventually had his regular universe version go through a change that led to him having this look!

Day 112

Day 112: April 22nd

Evil Daredevil

In the Shadowland storyline we get a new Daredevil costume as he becomes the leader of the Hand and attempts to use them as a force of good. While I have only skimmed the story I have read enough to know that the Hand as other things in mind and Daredevil becomes possessed by a Hand demon driving him more evil, even killing Bullseye. I really dig the look of this costume and since getting the minimate have been thinking if I can work a demon Daredevil into my comic project.

Day 111

Day 111: April 21st

Elektra

Probably one of the most requested remakes in Minimate history; the first time we got an Elektra minimate was waaaay back in wave 1. Now in wave 38 she makes her return! I really dig the redo and it makes it nicer to use in my projects since it fits in better with the more new minimates. I really like the serious look on her face, Elektra is generally a no nonsense, all business type character.

Day 110

Day 110: April 20th

Super Villain Prison Cell

When this first showed up at Luke’s Toy Store I knew I had to have at least one. Now that I have one I am sure I will be looking at getting at least one more if not a couple. I love the look of it and how well it works for the ideas I have for it. It holds one mate nicely but it can also hold more than one if need be, which increases its usefulness. You can see more pics from Luke himself here: http://www.lukestoystore.com/suviprce.html

Day 109

Day 109: April 19th

Captive Sabretooth custom

I am a big fan of the Sabretooth character, despite the fact that he has been written in a multitude of ways – some of which are just horrid, say for instance his appearance in the first X-Men movie. Probably one of my favorite story lines is when Vic turns himself over to Xavier to help him with his uncontrollable blood lust and they have him locked up at the mansion. There were a bunch of great stories during that time and I liked the look they came up with for him. This awesome custom came from the master customizer Luke!

Day 108

Day 108: April 18th

Principal Strickland

SLACKER!!! I love the fact that they made a Minimate of this character since he was such a classic part of all the movies. I love the look DST went with here and can see where I can make use of this type of character in comic projects!

Day 107

Day 107: April 17th

Sundays with my Son

Welcome to a new ongoing feature on the blog! Every Sunday I will showcase my son Kyes minimate collection. He will do the set up and most of the photography himself and we will work on the write ups together. So without further ado here is the first installment of Sundays with my Son!

Loki is my favorite villain in Thor. I like Ultimate Thors hammer. I really want to see the Thor movie.

Day 106

Day 106: April 16th

Biff Tannen

Hey Butthead! This is a great looking angry Biff from the first movie. They did a great job getting the facial expression good and mad looking and he looks awesome chasing after Marty! I might have to find out what kind of car he had in the movie and see if I can score a die cast one to go with this minimate!

Friday, April 15, 2011

Day 105

Day 105: April 15th

Marty McFly

While some might moan and complain about ‘yet another Marty’ minimate, I am happy to have it. This one looks great, captures the look from the movie and to add a little extra bonus he comes with the apple-crate skateboard too. The crate part even slides off the bottom board to help recreate the chase scene in the first movie!

Thursday, April 14, 2011

Day 104

Day 104: April 14th

Dr. Emmett Brown

The radiation suit look for Doc Brown is such a major part of the movie, I am glad DST did another box set with him in it! The helmet is great, especially since it can flip up! The new belt piece and the remote control are awesome add ins. And as if that wasn’t enough already they gave him a second chest block to reveal the bullet proof vest!! Great Scott this is a fantastic minimate!!

Day 103

Day 103: April 13th

Flame Trails

I think it is so awesome of DST to have made these flame trails as they are a rather iconic part of the Back to the Future movies! When the package pictures of the box set first came up I was disappointed to see or rather not see them anywhere. Very sneaky to have packed them at the bottom of the package behind the banner! It was a great surprise to find them still included!

Day 102

Day 102: April 12th

Walls of Ice

While I was at a taking my first trip into a teachers supply store(very exciting and dangerous all at once lol) I popped into the gaming store next door to look at what kind of terrain and buildings and what not that I might find useful for minimate photography. I found all kinds of great things to use and in the 50% off bin I came across these Walls of Ice markers. I used to play Dungeons and Dragons and loved the idea of using miniatures to play so I am not sure why it has taken me so long to hit this shop to look for stuff. These are some nice additions to a frost giant display!

Day 101

Day 101: April 11th

The Counter Dump Case Army Building

DST has started a really neat idea with the Dump Case or Counter Drop Case for minimates. They are single packed minimates in a case of 12 and are aimed at building armies of characters. They first ran these in the Battlestar Galactica series, having three different releases – Classic, Modern and one for the Razor release. They moved into the Marvel movie realm last year with the singles based on the Iron Man 2 movie. This year we will see these for Thor as well as Captain America. I think it is a great way for fans that want larger number of army builder characters to be able to get them without being piled on with tons of doubles from the two packs. I would love for them to venture into the comic side of Marvel, even doing a ‘Best of’ release of some previously released army builders – I would likely buy a couple cases of those!

Day 100

Day 100: April 10th

Thor

Happy 100th Day!!! When I started this blog getting to the 100th day seemed a very long way away but here it is! When I was planning this out and deciding which minimate I wanted to use on this post I had a lot of different ideas. In the end the movie version of Thor won out since I had so much fun taking pictures of this minimate that it only made sense to use it for this special landmark post. I am really excited to see the movie and am really happy with how great this minimate looks! Thanks to everyone who is enjoying this blog for the past 100 days and here is to the next 100!

Day 99

Day 99: April 9th

Destroyer

This is one of those cases of being able to kill birds with stones since the movie version of the Destroyer can stand in for the comic version perfectly. I like the simple look of him with out adding a bunch of sculpted details! It will be fun to see him in action on the big screen!

Friday, April 8, 2011

Day 98

Day 98: April 8th

Asgardian Royal Guard

To help balance things off a bit, these Royal Guards are a nice addition to the mix. The look is nice and regal looking, I am curious as to how many show up in the movie – will we actually see a big army of them or just some around Asgard. They were packed less to the case which I am finding I actually don’t mind as much since it is always nicer to have more bad guys than good guys lol.

Thursday, April 7, 2011

Day 97

Day 97: April 7th

Laufey

Here we have Laufey, King of the Frost Giants! Another nice addition to a frost giant army, having the king to lead the horde is a great touch. The only downfall I see is a lack of weapons but then again in the previews we can’t tell if they have weapons or not, so maybe it isn’t actually a problem.

Wednesday, April 6, 2011

Day 96

Day 96: April 6th

Frost Giant 1

This particular frost giant also shows up as the army builder in the regular comic shop wave so there will be a lot of these bigger frost giants in the armies. I know some complain that these ‘giants’ are still standard minimate size but from what I have seen in the movie previews they are not much bigger than Thor and the Asgardians that fight against them.

Tuesday, April 5, 2011

Day 95

Day 95: April 5th

Frost Giant 2

I found myself even more excited for these guys once they were out then I was when they were first announced. I really enjoy how they made these guys, the look is pretty nice and they fill a great spot as both movie and comic characters. From what I have seen in the trailers they look pretty spot on!

Monday, April 4, 2011

Day 94

Day 94: April 4th

Selvig

Who this character is in the Thor movie remains to be seen. Since he is one per case in the Thor army builder assortment it makes one wonder if he has a more important role. As a minimate he has a standard old scholar look to him. Nicely executed, he will make a nice addition to the civilian/bystander cast of my collection.

Sunday, April 3, 2011

Day 93

Day 93: April 3rd

Juggernaut

This is most likely the main reason people are buying this set! A bulked up Juggernaut helps make this character look giant like he should! I really enjoyed the first version of Cain but as other improvements were made to make minimates look bigger I was waiting for them to make a new, bigger Juggernaut. After seeing many versions of Hulk and Thing get ‘tested’ with bigger parts I am glad they didn’t make another Juggy till now, this one is fantastic!

Saturday, April 2, 2011

Day 92

Day 92: April 2nd

Nightcrawler

This is a highly anticipated release for Nightcrawler. I would hazard to say out of the 4 characters in this set he is one of the most wanted. I find the hairpiece seems a little large but I can overlook that with the inclusion of the ‘BAMF’ cloud base included. Just another little touch that adds so much to the fun of collecting Minimates!
