Day 258

Day 258 September 15th

Age of Apocalypse Blink

Blink is another one of my favourite characters to come out of the Age of Apocalypse storyline.  At this point in my comic reading/collecting I was all about Wolverine and the main X-Men titles.  I browsed around other books but these were the main ones and I was a hardcore Wolverine fan so I think it says a lot to the quality of the writers that other characters could rise up in my list of favourites.  I had wondered if DST made a Blink how they would do it and now I can say it was done awesomely!  The colours are dead on; the costume is perfect, right down to the quiver on her back and her javelins including a translucent, powered up one.  The reuse of Magiks teleportation base is a good fit here as well!  All in all this is easily one of my favourite minimates released this year!

Day 257

Day 257 September 14th

Age of Apocalypse Morph

Morph was probably the one character that really did not seem to fit the grim and gritty landscape that was the Age of Apocalypse storyline and that was the whole intent.  He was a prankster, a joker and his mannerisms and costume showed that all the light heartedness was not beaten out of the good guys in this universe.  DST did a great job capturing the bright vibrant colours of Morphs costume and the big grin on his white head is dead on!  I for one think this is a great minimate!

Day 256

Day 256 September 13th

Age of Apocalypse Sabretooth

This is arguably my most favourite character to come out of the Age of Apocalypse storyline.  The way he was written was amazing and I really enjoyed the character development, which is something lacking in most stories with Sabretooth in the regular Marvel universe.  Given how much I enjoyed this character in the comics I was pretty much through the roof excited when they announced him as a minimate.  The wait from the announcement till the release seemed like forever and then even longer till I got one of my own.  On a whole I am happy to have him but there are parts that make it less then the high level of excitement I had while waiting for it.  The first most glaring thing is the feet, which I know my picture doesn’t show but they are just plain feet, not even the paint of a boot going up the shin or anything.  He had boots in the comic so I had expected something with the minimate, but they seemed to drop the ball at that point.  The other piece that kind of bugs me is the oversized chest cap.  While I do see the point of it and yes Sabretooth is a bigger character, especially in this universe, it seems almost too big and bulky on the minimate.  A good friend of mine has done some modifications to his Sabretooth which include adding some boots and it seems to add some balance to the chest piece size, I might have to get some parts together and see if he is interested in repeating that work!

Day 255

Day 255 September 12th

Omega Red

One of the many villains in the X-Men and Wolverine stable of enemies, it is great to finally see Omega Red in minimate form.  I am really impressed with how well DST handled the coils from his arms, as this is a very important part of the overall look to the character.  DST did a great job with his hair as well since in the comics he has the big hair and they captured that very well, although it does get in the way of the awesome job they did with his face.  I am a bit torn on the bulked up chest piece they did.  While it does a good job with the costume look and he is a bigger character it almost seems too bulky on the minimate.  I know some people have trimmed it down and it looks pretty good but I am not sure if I am that interested in trying that modification myself.

Day 253

Day 253 September 10th

Danger Room Wolverine

Well here is a battle damaged Wolverine minimate…and it looks good.  BUT and that is a big BUT…it is identical to the battle ravaged Wolverine in the 2010 SDCC 90’s X-Men box set only in the yellow and blue costume not the shades of brown costume.  I really like the level of battle damage they gave him but it they would have at least given him a new or different face I would have been even happier.

Day 252

Day 252 September 9 th

Mega Man Zero

While I love the original Mega Man games and the characters in there I have no knowledge about the Mega Man Zero character.  I do have plans to change this however and it does not stop me from enjoying this minimate one bit!  This ‘player 2’ repaint makes me smile since it is basically the original Mega Man colour scheme, and very well executed as well!  I love the facial expression as it seems very suited to the source material.  The arm cannon looks great and the energy sword is very well done as well!  The huge hair flowing out the back does not hinder movement but the chest armour piece does restrict the arm movements a bit which is a bit of a drawback to this otherwise killer minimate!  Now DST go and get the original Mega Man license!!

Day 251

Day 251 September 8th

Red Hulk

Much like I said in my review of Wave 41s new bulky green Hulk I really think DST has nailed the bulky body look for the Red Hulk from one of the Marvel vs Capcom 3 SDCC exclusive sets!  So far with only the SDCC releases to go by I am quite happy with the MvsC3 line and am eager to scoop up the regular releases when they do arrive.  This new bulky Red Hulk is more sized to take on the Hulk in a scrap or to throw down with most of Wolverines X-Force crew!  There have been a few fans that have done some modifications to this minimate already, ranging from swapping the hair or the whole head to just some alterations to the face; all in all they look pretty good as well but I have not decided if I like any of them more than how the minimate came.  There is a certain level of anger in this face that seems to match very well with a lot of the Red Hulk stuff I have read.

Day 250

Day 250 September 7th

Iron Man

There is something about the metallic blue they used in this version of the stealth armour for Iron Man…actually it was that way for the movie version too…I just love the way it looks right off the bat!  I am glad to see DST put together some different pieces to give us a unique looking Iron Man without having to go too crazy with new parts.  I fully understand reusing parts and as long as it works/makes sense I am in full support of it!  I do enjoy this not overly bulky version of Iron Man, some armour bulk works but sometimes it can be too much and take away from the overall feel/look of the minimate.

Day 249

Day 249 September 6th

Morrigan

I was all too happy to hear the news about the Marvel vs Capcom 3 license since there are tons of Capcom games that I know and love the characters from.  One thing I was not too thrilled about was the reveal of this particular character.  I have never played Darkstalkers and really have no knowledge about the franchise but there is a part of me that blames the Darkstalkers inclusion in the previous Street Fighter 2 minimate line as part of the downfall of it before we could get the key characters from the SF universe.  In reality there were many factors that contributed to it I know but seeing Morrigan again in 2 different costumes brings up some lingering angst.  Aside from that this is a good looking minimate, leap and bounds better than her previous version for sure!  I still do enjoy how DST did the hairpiece again with the little wings in it and the way they made her wings to look proper to the source material is a great touch of creative thinking!

Day 248

Day 248 September 5th

Arthur

Wow I am not sure where to start with this minimate!  I guess the best place would be the fact that this is an AMAZING minimate!  I love Ghouls and Ghosts and when I head that we were getting an Arthur minimate I was over the moon, and then it got better because we were getting two!!  DST hit all the great details with this minimate – the face, the expression, the helmet, the sculpted armour on the shoulders, the extra pieces that add to the armoured look without going too far on adding bulk; it is all win!  I love that we got the trusty lance and the axe and shield, and how nice is that shield, fantastic!!  It even has a familiar enough shape that it would be pretty easy to use in a custom of Link from the Zelda games!  I would love to get the non-armoured Arthur just to make the set complete lol!  My only gripe is a minor one since in the original game when Arthur has the gold armour he also has a red cape – as seen in my pics it is pretty easy to fix with a spare classic Thor kickin around!
