Day 59

Day 59: February 28th

‘Glow in the Dark’ Creature from the Black Lagoon

This is the third time DST has given us a glow in the dark minimate (the previous two being in the Ghostbusters line) and I love it! They are such fun minimates and it is always cool to see them glowing in the dark of my toy area after they have been sitting in the light all day. Cool and yet spooky all at the same time!

Day 58

Day 58: February 27th

Dr. Reed

Now this is one fun minimate! Dr. Reed is ready for some good times swimming in his trunks with oxygen tanks and alternate hairpiece with divers mask! He has flippers and comes armed with a spear gun too!

Day 57

Day 57: February 26th

The Creature from the Black Lagoon

I can confess to not having watched this classic monster movie. I was more into the Wolf Man and Dracula but I love how DST has made this minimate. I am now in the process of gathering these classic films to give a watch to and see how the monster movies were done before the digital enhancement age.

Day 56

Day 56: February 25th

Black and White Creature from the Black Lagoon

The second half of the Toys R Us exclusive set, the Creature looks great in black and white, really lets the sculpted details pop out a bit more!

Day 55

Day 55: February 24th

Black and White Wolf Man

Part of the exclusive to Toys R Us set of Universal Monsters minimates, this black and white version of the Wolf Man is a great nod to the classic black and white monster/horror films of yesteryear.

Day 54

Day 54: February 23rd

The Wolf Man

Here we have poor Larry fully transformed into a werewolf. I love the new hand and feet pieces that DST made for the Wolf Man minimates…they have just the right shaggy look to them!

Tuesday, February 22, 2011

Day 53

Day 53: February 22nd

Transformation Wolf Man

After Larry gets bitten by a werewolf he becomes cursed and transforms into one himself. DST does a very good job capturing that transformation in this minimate. On a bonus note, this minimate gives some great pieces for making a Teen Wolf custom!

Day 52

Day 52: February 21st

Larry Talbot

Kicking off my look at the first run of the Universal Monsters minimates is the soon to be Wolf Man, Larry Talbot. This is a good looking minimate; as much as a guy in a suit minimate can be good looking…the plain look fits the look needed from the film.

Day 51

Day 51: February 20th

Coffins

Stepping to the side of minimates directly with this post I am showcases some almost perfect scale coffins I had acquired to add to my stock of useful scaled items. These were discovered by a member on the Minimate Multiverse forum and through a deal with another member I picked up a set which said member then painted to give a wooden look to them. He did a fantastic job with the paint work and I look forward to making good use of these in future projects. It seemed only fitting to toss a few of the Marvel Zombies into these pics, although the forthcoming Dracula minimates might have been better suited!

Day 50

Day 50: February 19th

‘Mirror Mirror’ Spock

Dipping back to a classic episode of The Original Series of Star Trek comes the box set based on the alternate reality episode ‘Mirror Mirror’. In this reality the familiar crew of the Enterprise are evil and the stand out part held forever is pop culture is that ‘evil’ Spock has a goatee. Many a joke has been carried out off of this little reference and it has transcended the generations.

Day 49

Day 49: February 18th

Borg Drones

Packaged along with Captain Picard was a Borg drone. I am sure there were many TNG fans that saw this as a great idea as they could army build Borg and use the spare Picards for customizing more TNG characters we never got. What a phenomenal amount of detail done with this minimate, right down to the Starfleet uniform underneath the chest piece. I love the look of the face with the optic piece removed as well!

Day 48

Day 48: February 17th

Captain Jean Luc Picard

Taking a bit of a swing back a bit I nabbed a bunch of the Star Trek minimates recently. I was mostly after the bridge play set pieces they came with but seeing how The Next Generation was my Star Trek show growing up I am all to happy to have Picard up here. DST nailed the look here perfectly and it really makes me wish we could have gotten more minimates from the TNG series.

Day 47

Day 47: February 16th

Black Slime Monster

I am curious to see if the Black Slime Monster in the game is made from a new version of the slime ideas from the movie or if it was just the easy way to name him. I like the look of this minimate and he is generic enough to be used as a monster in any kind of scene/story/play time especially with the new M.A.X. elite heroes…hmmm now there is an idea brewing!

Tuesday, February 15, 2011

Day 46

Day 46: February 15th

Azetlor

Going by how this minimate looks I am guessing that Azetlor in the game will be more of a floating pile of rocks and then the crown looking top part. DST did a nice job using the clear body to capture such a unique look and I am looking forward to finding him in the game!

Monday, February 14, 2011

Day 45

Day 45: February 14th

Architect

Another ghost from the video game, the Architect minimate has some great colors to it. The mainly black minimate with fiery orange and yellows and reds really pops this minimate! I am curious if the ghost in the game has the same pop factor.

Sunday, February 13, 2011

Day 44

Day 44: February 13th

Chef Demassi

In what seemed to many as an odd pairing DST teamed up with Amazon to create a box set of ghosts from the Ghostbusters videogame, to be sold in a huge bundled deal on Amazon. This was a crazy time as many people who were not interested in the game were planning on ordering it just to get their hands on this set of minimates, plus some of the other exclusives too. As it went there were some delays with this set and it ended up being dropped from the Amazon bundle and sold more widely. Now I did buy the game anyways and have encountered the Chef already, the minimate likeness is spot on!

Day 43

Day 43: February 12th

Janine Melnitz

The quirky secretary/receptionist of both movies, this look is Janine’s look from the second movie. While she was fun and quirky in the movies I think her character really got to shine in The Real Ghostbusters cartoon series and I am excited to see where DST takes that minimate line!

Friday, February 11, 2011

Day 42

Day 42: February 11th

Walter Peck

Many speculated that we would not get this pivotal ‘bad guy’ in this minimate line but he really made the perfect addition to the third box set. DST even went so far as to include an extra hairpiece for him, a huge glop of marshmallow goo that hit him at the end of the movie!!

Thursday, February 10, 2011

Day 41

Day 41: February 10th

‘Gooey’ Winston

This is one of the best facial expressions yet as it really lands the look from the scene after they have defeated the Stay Puft Marshmallow man and the energy is all excitement!

Wednesday, February 9, 2011

Day 40

Day 40: February 9th

‘Gooey’ Egon

This minimate has such a great facial expression! I love how DST pulled these guys off, right from the facial expressions to how they included the equipment being coated in marshmallow goo. Instead of adding extra bulk with the goo they left the minimate and equipment in a base white and just used a tampo for the exposed, non-marshmallowed parts.

Tuesday, February 8, 2011

Day 39

Day 39: February 8th

‘Gooey’ Peter

Again DST brings us the rest of the pieces we need to complete a certain look for the four Ghostbusters, this time completing the covered-in-marshmallow-goo look from the end of the first movie. With Peter they had a great idea, since he only ended up with some marshmallow in his hair they included a marshmallow hairpiece for him in the third box set instead of using up a whole character slot! This allowed us to use a spare Peter from the first box set or TRU wave to complete the team while still giving us a new character in the third box set!

Monday, February 7, 2011

Day 38

Day 38: February 7th

Stay Puft Marshmallow Man

Here we have another giant star of the first Ghostbusters movie. Anyone, even someone who is not a big fan, will know who the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man is…who could not remember a gigantic marshmallow man! DST did a fantastic job capturing his look in the smaller scale of the minimates. While many complain about not getting the giant characters as minimates of giant scale I think as look as they get the look right I will overlook the scale…it’s one of the reasons I started collecting minimates to begin with!

Sunday, February 6, 2011

Day 37

Day 37: February 6th

Gozer

Here we have the main villain of the first film, the all powerful Gozer! DST really nailed the creepy yet simple look of this character design. The use of a kind of pearly milky white as the main body color really adds some flair to this minimate.

Saturday, February 5, 2011

Day 36

Day 36: February 5th

Winston Zeddemore

Ah such a great character addition to the team! When I started re-watching these movies I saw just how much Winston was the perfect fit against the three more scientisty characters. DST did a great job capturing his look from the first movie, mustache and all!!

Friday, February 4, 2011

Day 35

Day 35: February 4th

Ray Stantz

Stepping back to the first movie this is the basic Ray from that movie. Being a part of the second box set Ray came with the closed trap accessory as well as his goggles! It was nice that over the first 2 box sets we got the 4 main Ghostbusters along with other movie characters. I would not have been as happy if they would have tried to release the four guys in one set since they provide anchors for other characters to be included in the sets as well.

Day 34

Day 34: February 3rd

C2E2 Battle Beast

Now this is another abnormal entry since it is still sealed in its bag! I am torn on what to do here since I am not 100% sold on how these guys look. In fact I have had a couple already and traded them away without opening them. So I put the question out to you, the readers of this blog, what would you recommend – do I open it and check it out? Or is there someone out there who is in need of him and wants to buy/trade for him? Let me know what you have to say on this!

Day 33

Day 33: February 2nd

1957 Corvette

Now this might seem a touch odd for the blog but I figure it still fits the theme since it will fit 2 minimates rather nicely! It doesn’t hurt that it is also my most favorite dream car as well. The minimates inside are customs my wife and I made of ourselves a few years ago so they were the ideal choice to be in the car for this picture.

Day 32

Day 32: February 1st

Scolari Brother Tony

The other half of the courtroom ghost pair, Tony has some nicely done details in his face and chest block. The reused clawed hands work better for Tony then they did with the original minimate they were made for, the Wolverine: Origins Sabretooth. As a whole I love all the translucent parts with the ghosts from this series, I may have to try some fun lighting sources and take some different pictures of them!
